A process comprising treating a lignocellulosic material preferably pulp in the presence of a transition metal catalyst with a oxidizing agent selected from a group consisting of hydrogen peroxide, hypochlorite, hypochlorous acid and any combination thereof to form a treated lignocellulosic material having a viscosity equal to or less than about 17 cp and having reducing functional groups selected from the group consisting of aldehyde and aldehyde type functional groups at the C6 and Cl positions but predominating at the Cl position.

L'invention concerne un procédé consistant à traiter un matériau lignocellulosique de préférence, de la pulpe, en présence d'un catalyseur de métal de transition avec un agent oxydant choisi dans un groupe constitué de peroxyde d'hydrogène, d'hypochlorite, d'acide hypochloreux et de n'importe quelle combinaison de ces derniers afin de former un matériau lignocellulosique traité présentant une viscosité égale ou inférieure à environ 17 C.P. et comprenant des groupes fonctionnels réducteurs choisis dans le groupe constitué d'aldéhyde et de groupes fonctionnels du type aldéhyde en positions C6 et C1 mais prédominants en position C1.
