INVENTION: LIM SECONDARY REACTANCE COMPENSATION AND THRUST CONTROL INVENTOR: W. JOHN BALLANTYNE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In a transportation system involving a track side linear induction motor (LIM) primary and a vehicle carrying a LIM secondary, an arrange- ment is provided for selectively altering the thrust characteristics of the LIM secondary in operation. The LIM secondary has a three-phase reaction winding rather than a conventional reaction plate. Each of the individual phase windings has a controlled variable resistance parallel connected with a capacitor across its ends. The capacitors compensate for energy normally stored in the air gap between the primary and secondary, and provide improved thrust characteristics during high slip operation. The resistances can be controlled from within the vehicle thereby providing a form of on-board thrust control which can in large measure replace the more standard voltage control which is normally provided at each LIM primary on the track.
