Abstract This invention comprehends a closed face spin casting style fishing reel that has a front cover, a reel body and a rear cover. A spinner head assembly is mounted on a center shaft and includes a pickup pin mechanism for extending and retracting a pickup pin radially of the spinner head assembly. A radially in- wardly directed means is provided in the front cover that defines a forwardly facing shoulder which overlaps with the outer end of the extended pickup pin so as to hold a line being retrieved onto a spool in a confined path whereby the line is instantaneously trapped for retrieval and cannot jump or distort outward beyond the end of the pickup pin.
