This device allows the variation of the coupling between two points in an RF circuit in a very simple way whilst maintaining the RF phase relationship and varying the relative magnitude of the RF fields. The device is characterised by a simple mechanical control of coupling value, that has negligible effect on the phase shift across the device. This is achieved by the simple rotation of the polarisation of a TE111 mode inside a cylindrical cavity. Such a device does not contain resistive elements, and the sliding mechanical surfaces are free from high RF currents. This device finds an application in standing wave linear accelerators, where it is desirable to vary the relative RF field in one set of cavities with respect to another, in order that the accelerator can operate successfully over a wide range of energies.

Le dispositif de l'invention permet de faire varier le couplage entre deux points dans un circuit HF de manière très simple, tout en maintenant la relation de phase HF et en faisant varier la grandeur relative des champs HF. Le dispositif est caractérisé par une unique commande mécanique simple de la valeur de couplage, dont l'effet est négligeable sur le décalage de phase dans le dispositif. A cet effet, on effectue une simple rotation de la polarisation d'un mode TE111 à l'intérieur d'une cavité cylindrique. Le dispositif de l'invention ne renferme pas d'éléments résistifs, et les surfaces mécaniques coulissantes sont exemptes de courants HF élevés. Ce dispositif peut être appliqué aux accélérateurs linéaires à onde stationnaire, pour lesquels il est préférable de faire varier le champ HF relatif d'un ensemble de cavités par rapport à un autre, de manière que l'accélérateur puisse fonctionner correctement sur une large gamme d'énergies.
