A linear actuator such as a hydraulic cylinder has linear position sensing apparatus. At least one magnet is provid-ed in a recess in outer surface of the piston for generating a magnetic field that passes through the wall of the cylinder housing. A magnetic sensor arrangement determines the axial position of the piston relative to the housing and comprises at least a pair of magnetic sensor elements arranged at spaced apart locations along the external surface of the wall for sensing the strength of the magnetic field passing through the wall of the housing. The recess in the piston is axially positioned between the first and second end surfaces of the piston and the at least one magnet is disposed between axially spaced north and south pole pieces.
Linvention concerne un actionneur linéaire tel quun vérin hydraulique comportant un appareil de détection de position linéaire. Au moins un aimant est placé dans une concavité ménagée dans la surface extérieure dun piston afin de produire un champ magnétique au travers de la paroi de la chemise du vérin. Un ensemble de détection magnétique établit la position axiale du piston par rapport à la chemise et comprend au moins une paire déléments de détection magnétique occupant des positions espacées le long de la surface externe de la paroi de manière à détecter lintensité du champ magnétique passant au travers de la paroi de la chemise. La concavité est ménagée axialement dans le piston entre ses première et seconde surfaces dextrémité et le ou les aimants est/sont placé(s) entre des pièces polaires nord et sud espacées axialement.
