(57) Abstract A process for preparing a nonflammable, linear, nongraphitic carbonaceous fiber having improved elongatabilily by heat t??ng a linear, stabilized polymeric precursor material fiber in a relaxed condition and without subjecting the fiber to tension or st??in an inert non-oxidizing atmosphere at a temperature above 525°C to irreversibly heat set said fiber, and a linear carbona- ceous fiber having improved elongatability of from 3 to 9 percent and a tenacity of from 2 to 7 g/d.
