ABSTRACT The specification describes a linear D.C. permanent magnet motor having a stationary wound member and a field member movable relative to the wound member. The stationary wound member has a plurality of windings wound on a slotted magnetic structure and a commutator adapted for connection to a D.C source. The field member includes a permanent magnet for developing a magnetic field which interacts with the energized windings of the wound member to cause the field member to move relative to the wound member. The motor also includes a support arranged to maintain air gaps between the wound and field members.
