LINEAR FREQUENCY MODULATOR FOR FM/CW RADIO ALTIMETER Abstract of the Disclosure A linear frequency modulator for a varactor tuned transis- tor microwave oscillator used in an FM/CW radio altimeter where the oscillator-frequency v. varactor bias characteristic is non-linear. A linear triangular wave is converted by means of a function gen- erator to the non-linear wave required for varactor bias to cause linear frequency modulation of the oscillator. linearity of modu- lation is tested by measuring variations in the period of a cali- bration signal derived from a delay line. Variations in the cali- bration signal period, sampled at times corresponding to low fre- quency and to high frequency outputs of the oscillator, are used to control the function generator for altering the form of the varac- tor bias wave in portions thereof corresponding to low frequency and to high frequency outputs of the oscillator.
