ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Linear polarizers are prepared by deposition of an alignment film on a substrate, the deposition of the alignment film occurring in a direction which makes an acute angle to the supporting substrate. A solution of dichroic or pleochroic dyes in a volatile solvent is then deposited onto the alignment film and left to evaporate. After evaporation of the solvent a layer of uniformly aligned dye molecules is left on the substrate. Unpolarized light incident on this layer becomes linearly polarized in trans- mission through the layer.
