25 ABSTRACT A linear mechanical lock including a housing formed of a single sheet of metal or the like folded to a generally tubular shape. A rod bearing and end bearing are formed integrally with the single sheet within the housing. A rod is slidably supported on the rod bearing for axial movement through the housing. A coil spring coaxial with the rod has a normal inside diameter for clutching the rod against axial movement. The coil spring is axially fixed between the end bearing such that one or more end coils of the spring means are canted to a rod locking condition under axial loading of the rod relative to the housing. One or more end tangs of the coil spring are circumferentially fixed to the housing. The coil spring can be unwound for releasing the rod. The present invention also provides a method for making the housing for the linear mechanical lock.
