The drugs of choice for treating intra-abdominal sepsis caused by infection with Gram negative bacteria include .beta.-lactams such as cefoxitin. However, unless the drugs are administered within 8 to 12 hours post-infection, the infecting microbes rapidly gain entry to and reside in cells of the reticuloendothelial system, where the microbes appear to become shielded from further drug action. It has been found that a liposomal cefoxitin formulation is effective in reducing the bacterial counts and the mortality of animals suffering from intra-abdominal Gram negative sepsis. The preferred liposome is phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylserine in the molar ratio of from 9.5:0.5 to 1:1.
