A method of sizing liposomes by passing a suspension of liposomes through an aluminum oxide porous film under pressure is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, the porous film is a branched type anodic aluminum oxide porous film. The process produces a population of liposomes substantially free of liposomes above a pre- determined maximum size useful in administering drugs or other bioactive agents, such as in the treatment of cancer or AIDS- related illnesses. Also disclosed for carrying out the method is an apparatus comprising one or more fitter assemblies for holding the aluminum oxide porous film in operational configuration (33), a pressurized supply vessel for supplying the suspension of liposomes under pressure to filter assemblies (31), and a receiving vessel for receiving the filtrate from the filter assemblies (32).
