Abstract - 1 - The present invention is directed to liposomes cytotoxic to virus-infected cells which comprise as membrane constituents phosphatidylcholine having a phase-transition temperature below 37°C, an acidic phospholipid and cholesterol. Similar liposomes which additionally comprise a phospholipid linked to a peptide possessing anti-HIV activity, said peptide comprising an amino acid sequence: Asn-Phe-Pro-Leu-Ile-Ile-Lys-Asn-Leu-Lys-Ile-Glu- Asp-Ser-Asp-Thr-Tyr-Ile-Cys-Glu-Val-Glu-Asp-Gln- Lys-Glu-Glu wherein the Cys residue is L-cysteine, or S-benzylated or S- acetamidomethylated derivative of L-cysteine. The liposomes of the present invention are suitable for use in the treatment of various viral infections including AIDS.
