ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of liquefaction of coal, comprises dispersing coal powder having an average particle size between 70- and 300-mesh in suspension in an aqueous solution of at least one hydroxide of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal under turbulent conditions for a relatively long period of time. The pH-value of the aqueous hydroxide solution is preferably above 10.
