A packet for immobilizing a liquid comprised of a liquid permeable sheet formed into an envelope wherein two of the sides of the sheet are sealed to form a pair of end seals wherein the two remaining sides of the sheet are sealed together to form a center seal, wherein contained within the envelope is a quantity of swellable absorbent granules which swell to a size greater than the size of those granules in their dry condition, and wherein as the liquid absorbing granules swell, they break the center seal of the envelope to release the liquid absorbing granules to the outside environment of the package to absorb liquid. Also disclosed is a process for their production.
