Abstract Apparatus and method for removing solids from a liquid. A vessel having a conical shape is used. A contaminated liquid is fed into the vessel lower end, of small diameter, in a helical path. As the liquid flows upwardly the solids agglomerate and separate as a rotating sludge blanket in an upper large diameter part of the vessel. Clarified liquid flows through the sludge blanket and into an outlet. The sludge blanket excess is removed from the vessel through a centrally located downcomer having a mouth axially located in the upper part of the vessel. The downcomer extends out of the vessel for delivering the sludge to a suitable location. The method and apparatus provide a fast reliable way for cleaning a liquid, such as water for municipal or industrial use, of solids.
