Fluorine-containing, chiral liquid crystal compounds comprise: (a) a chiral fluorochemical terminal portion containing at least one methylene group and optionally containing at least one catenary ether oxygen atom; (b) a saturated, chiral or achiral, hydrocarbon terminal portion; and (c) a central core connecting the terminal portions. The compounds have smectic mesophases or latent smectic mesophases and are useful, for example, in liquid crystal display devices.

Cette invention concerne des composés de cristaux liquides chiraux contenant du fluor qui comportent (a) une partie terminale de composé fluoré chiral contenant au moins un groupe méthylène et contenant éventuellement au moins un atome d'oxygène d'éther caténaire, (b) une partie terminale d'hydrocarbure saturé, chiral ou non chiral et (c) un noyau central reliant ces parties terminales. Lesdits composés possèdent des mésophases smectiques ou des mésophases smectiques latentes et ils sont utiles, par exemple, dans les dispositifs d'affichage à cristaux liquides.
