A light converging unit using a prism lens adapted for use in a back light device and which enables the device to be manufactured in a thinner size and at a lower cost. A liquid crystal display comprising; a display means for displaying characters and graphics, said means including a display portion comprising at least a liquid crystal panel; an illuminating means for illuminating the display portion of the liquid crystal panel; a converging means for converging light rays from the illuminating means at the display portion of the liquid crystal panel. A prism lens comprises a plurality of prism portions provided with a flat portion formed thereon. Said flat portion may be formed at the bottom between two neighboring prism portions. A combination of top and bottom flat portions formed on and between the prism portions are also possible.
