ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A liquid crystal display device which provides one area which is transparent when the display electrodes are unenergized and which darkens in the regions of energized electrodes and which provides a separate area which is dark when the electrodes in that area are unenergized, but which lightens when those electrodes are energized. Electrodes may overlap from one area into the remaining part of the display so that energization of such an electrode produces lightening in the area portion, but darken- ing where the electrodes overlap into the remaining part of the display.
