ABSTRACT The disclosure describes the provisions of a liquid crystal display device which does not require highly accurate alignment of two transparent substrates, precludes damage to picture element electrodes during manufacture and is resistant to high temperatures. The device also includes a thin light shielding layer which shields the regions between picture element electrodes from light. The light shielding layer is formed by an acrylic resin With a cross-linked structure in which carbon black particles are dispersed, between a plurality of picture element electrodes formed on a transparent substrate.
