- - HOE 89/F 228 Abstract of the disclosure: Liquid-crystal display having structured carrier plates and process for producing structured carrier plates Liquid-crystal switching and display devices have recently found numerous new fields of application such as, for example, for flat display screens. A uniform layer thickness of the liquid-crystalline material is of great importance for a satisfactory operation of the LC display. In order to ensure a uniform layer thickness, spacers are used in the display. In the present liquid-crystal display, said spacers are composed of projections of at least one of the (glass) carrier plates. These projec- tions have a height of 0.1 µm to 0.1 mm and are obtained by a controlled, striation-free etching process. The etching process of the carrier plate(s) includes as subordinate steps, inter alia, the application of an etch-initiating layer (for example made of titanium), the application of a etch-resisting layer (for example made of gold) and also the actual etching process (for example, with aqueous hydrofluoric acid). The displays according to the invention can easily be filled with nematic and smectic LC materials and are mechanically very rigid.
