SPECIFICATION TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Be it known that we KENNETH JOHN HARRISON resident of 28 Oakfield Road, Malvern Link, Worcestershire, England, EDWARD PETER RAYNES, resident of 23 Leadon Road, Malvern, Worcestershire, England, FRANCES CAROLYN SAUNDERS resident of 24 Walnut Crescent, Fruitlands, Malvern Wells, Worcestershire, England, and DAVID JOHN THOMPSON, resident of 50 Marle Croft, Old Hall Park, Whitefield, Manchester, England, have invented certain new and useful improvements in ORGANIC MATERIALS and we do hereby declare the following to be a full clear and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains, to make and use the same: ABSTRACT a material suitable for a guest-host liquid crystal device com- prises a solution of a liquid crystal material and a pleochroic dye where in the pleochroic dye comprises at least one anthrquinone compound free from water solubilising and ionic substituents and having the formula: Image Formula I wherein Q is NH2, OH, alkyl, aryl, NO2 or halo; n is 0 to 4; each X independently is H, -SR, -NZ1Z2 or Q; each R independently is alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl; Z1 & Z2 are independently H, alkul, cycloalkyl or aryl; provided that there are at least two groups X which are different -SR groups.
