-1 - Abstract The present invention is directed to liquid crystalline compounds having an optically active .gamma.-lactone ring of the formula: Image (A) wherein R1 is a group selected from the group consisting of Image and Image ; n and e are each independently 0 or 1; R3 is an alkyl group having 1 to 15 carbon atoms; R2 is a group of the formula: -(CO)m-R4; m is 0 or 1; R4 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl having 1 to 15 carbon atoms; and the symbol * denotes an asymmetric carbon atom, intermediates thereof, and a process for the production of the same.
