A writing instrument comprising a liquid projection head (41) which projects liquid onto a support (8) from a distance, and a processing unit (6) which activates the projection head. The instrument also comprises measuring means (12) which are used to measure the distance between the projection head and the support, and means for detecting (18) when the instrument is held by a user. The processing unit is adapted in such a way that it can control activation of the liquid projection head (41) when the measuring means determine that the distance between the projection head and the support is lower than a maximum predetermined value and when the detection means (18) detect that the instrument is held by a user.
