A liquid level indicator for sealing engagement with an opening of a receptacle. A float is used which rests at the liquid level and which is connected to a float rod, which in turn is pivotally connected to a fixed and slidable rod. Upon changing liquid levels, the float and, accordingly, the slidable rod move and the position of the slidable rod with respect to a marked transparent cup disposed outside of the receptacle, indicates the liquid level. The transparent cup covers the portion of the indicator outside of the receptacle and serves to provide a fluid- and air-tight seal between the interior and exterior of the receptacle when the indicator is in place. In one embodiment the indicator may be used with oil tanks. A transparent cup for use with existing devices is also taught.
