ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention is directed to a liquid-level sensor utilizing a ferromagnetic fluid. The detector includes a magnetic member and a casing member, the two members being serarated by a clearance space and arranged for relative move- ment. A ferromagnetic fluid is disposed in the clearance space and is retained in position by the magnetic field of the magnetic member. The casing member supports sensor means for providing a signal representative of the relative position of the members. The provision of a ferromagnetic fluid in the clearance space acts as a lubricant between the two moving members allowing a smaller clearance to be used and thus increase the accuracy over prior art devices of the type where the fluid, the level of which is being sensed, fills the clearance space. In particular, the prior art devices have a tendency to stick when cold and the clearance space is occupied by high viscosity liquids.
