An improved method and apparatus for treating liquor containing biodegradable wastes wherein the liquor is first delivered to a quiescent primary settling zone and then to an aeration zone. The aerated liquor is delivered downwardly through a column of submerged fixed media having a high surface area to volume ratio so that aerobic microorganisms can grow on their surface. The liquor is recirculated through the aeration zone and fixed media, and is withdrawn from the unit after treatment. A portion of the aerated liquor from the top of the fixed media is recycled back into the primary settling zone to denitrify the nitrate rich aerated liquor by deoxygenating the dissolved nitrates and to equalize the BOD load in the secondary aerobic treatment zone.
Méthode et appareil améliorés pour le traitement d'une liqueur renfermant des déchets biodégradables; la liqueur est d'abord dirigée vers une zone de sédimentation primaire au repos, puis vers une zone d'aération. La liqueur aérée s'écoule vers le bas à travers une colonne de milieux fixes immergés, possédant un rapport élevé aire surfacique/volume, de telle façon que les microorganismes aérobies puissent croître sur leur surface. Après recirculation de la liqueur à travers la zone d'aération et les milieux fixes, elle est retirée de l'unité après le traitement. Une partie de la liqueur aérée provenant de la partie supérieure des milieux fixes est recyclée dans la première zone de sédimentation pour dénitrifier la liqueur aérée riche en nitrate, par désoxygénation des nitrates dissous, et pour égaliser la charge de DBO dans la deuxième zone de traitement aérobie.
