Highly graphitic carbons with average d002 spacings less than 3.37 .ANG. are desirable as high capacity anode materials for non-aqueous rechargeable lithium ion batteries. However, such graphitic anodes are incompatible with certain common electrolyte solvents, including propylene carbonate. Unexpectedly, boron treated, but otherwise similar, graphitic carbon anodes can be compatible with these solvents. Boron treatment can be additionally used to further glaphitize the carbon anode.
