Battery control system for a solid metallic electrolyte battery, such as a lithium-polymer battery, comprising temperature detectors to detect the temperatures of the cells in the battery, heating elements to heat the cells, a heating element controller receiving signals from the temperature detectors and controlling the current supplied to the heating elements so as to maintain each cell at a predetermined temperature, and a supply controller which detects power demand from the battery and regulates to the predetermined temperature in response to a level of power to be supplied by the battery or to the battery. The supply controller regulates at least a float temperature, a charge temperature and a supply temperature. The controller comprises also a voltage detector which detects voltage at each of the cells when they are active, and determines if one of the cells may be damaged by sustained use. The battery is disconnected from the supply connection after confirmation that one of the cells may be damaged.
