Disclosed is a novel live vaccine against E. coli O157:H7, to prevent intestinal colonization by the pathogen. In a preferred embodiment, the vaccine comprises a non-pathogenic, wild strain of Salmonella landau naturally expressing the O157 antigen as part of its lipopolysaccharide. The vaccine is particularly useful in maintaining cattle herds free of E. coli O157:H7 and in reducing carriage and fecal shedding of E. coli O157:H7 prior to slaughter, thus potentially reducing the clinical incidence of E. coli O157:H7 infections in humans.
