A liver function testing apparatus measures values .DELTA.logT1 and .DELTA.logT2, corresponding to pulse wave signals obtained upon passage through a prescribed optical path in vital tissue, n times when a sensor having first and second light sources and a light receiving element is attached to a testee before injection of a specific dye. A value .alpha.0 is calculated by a two-variable statistical computation as to n .DELTA.logT1 and n .DELTA.logT2 on the basis of an operation expression of logT1 = .alpha.0logT2, and .DELTA.logT1 and AlogT2 corresponding to pulse wave signals are measured in response to intensity levels of first light and second light passing through the vital tissue from injection to a prescribed time on the basis of decision outputs representing levels of the first light and the second light from the light sources after the specific dye is injected. A value Cg corresponding to specific dye concentration in blood is operated from .alpha.0, .DELTA.logT1 and .DELTA.logT2. A simulation curve as a function of time changes of the result of the measurement is calculated by the application of the least squares method, thereby to obtain a blood plasma disappearance rate K and a T-minute retention rate R% of the specific dye on the basis of the simulation curve.
