A floating or submersible water tank heater including a Calrod heater, electrical connection leads for connection to a proper source of power, a thermostatic switch controlling power delivery to the heater and a temperature sensing element in controlling relation to the switch. The Calrod heater is designed such that the interior heating coil is spaced a predetermined distance from the ends of the covering material such that a portion of the cover material is not heated and the heat is only developed in that area which encloses the coil to thereby provide a hot and a cold section with the temperature sensing element communicating with both of the sections to transmit a combined or moderated temperature to the thermostatic switch. The entire unit is selectively floatable or submersible and in either useage may be provided with a readily placeable guard to prevent contact of the heater with the sides or bottom of the tank into which it is placed.
