TITLE LOAD BOOSTER WHEEL ASSEMBLY ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The rear end of the truck frame (generally an auxiliary frame which is mounted for fore and aft movement relative to the main truck frame) carries a load boosting rear wheel assembly. The wheels are mounted on a transverse axle which is supported by a forwardly extending wishbone, the front of which has a ball and socket connection to a depending support bracket. The rear portion of the wishbone is guided for vertical movement between the load carrying position which is the downward position of the rear axle and an elevated position in which the wheels are raised to an inoperative position generally employed in off highway operations. The wishbone and, therefore, the wheels are actuated to the downward position by air pressure applied inside of the air bag assembly mounted between a plate carried by the wishbone and a plate carried by the frame. In order to obtain a very large motion of the rear wheel assembly, the air bag assembly is sub- stantially longer than those customarily employed in the past and the midsection of the air bag assembly is provided with a rigid annulus which, in turn, is guided or constrained to linear motion, thus obviating the tendency of the air bag to go "out of column". The wishbone is bent adjacent the ball and socket connection so that the axle is raised relative to the ball and socket. When the rear wheels are in the operating or load carrying position, the end plates of the air bag assembly are substantially parallel to help insure that the bag remains in column when under load. This is achieved by canting the upper end plate to match the bend of the wishbone to bring the plates into the parallel relationship. Since only one air bag is used, the loading on the wheels will remain equal as the wheels pass over uneven terrain. -2-
