A load cell apparatus (100, 200, 300) for use with a structure (76, 86, 476) comprises a cell block (70, 370, 470) that flexes in response to an applied load and a transducer (142) that is adapted to measure a distance (160) across a gap (162). In some embodiments, the gap (162) is defined between the transducer (142) and the structure (76, 86, 476), and in other embodiments, the gap (162) is defined between the transducer (142) and the cell block (70, 370, 470).
