A protection circuit protects an electronic switching device from a destructive transient voltage, such as that caused by an automotive load dump. The protection circuit includes a first protection device and a second protection device. The first protection device responds to the destructive transient voltage by conducting a protection current and providing a bias signal responsive to the protection current. The second protection device receives the bias signal and provides a control signal to the switching device in response to the bias signal. The switching device provides the load current to the load responsive to the control signal, when the destructive transient voltage occurs.
