A load gripping conveyor that is especially useful for carrying pieces of meat to be processed includes input and output end rotors around which is mounted an endless carrier belt defining a conveying forward span, and at least gripper device connected to the inner surface of the belt which includes in main lever member provided with a hook and being pivotally connected to the belt inner surface at a first location thereon about a main pivot axis. The gripper device further includes a link assembly having a leading end connected to the main lever member and a trailing end connected to the belt inner surface at a second location thereon downstream from the first location. Operation???, the link assembly cooperates with the input rotor upon rotation thereof from a load receiving position wherein the hook protrudes outwardly through an opening provided on the belt to a load gripping position wherein the hook moves inwardly toward the belt structure outer surface for gripping the load thereon a first embodiment of the load gripping conveyor employs link assembly formed by a head link member pivotally connected to a tail link member, a second embodiment employs a head link member pivotally connected to a tail link member through one or more intermediate lever members. A third embodiment employs link assembly formed of an elongated spring band.
