Case 2705 IMPROVED LOAD SHARING CONTROL SYSTEM ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A load sharing system for sharing load between two synchronous motors coupled to drive a common mechanical load which has individually operated clutches each coupling its respective motor to the common load. The clutches can be released or pulsed for short intervals to bring the sharing of load to within, for example, ?5%. At least one of the synchronous motors, and preferably two, has an auxiliary field winding on the rotor with the same number of poles as the direct axis main field winding but providing when energized with direct current a magnetic polar field whose axes are displaced singularly from the axis of the direct axis main polar field. Thus, by controlling the current the resultant of the direct axis main field and the auxiliary field can be shifted. The auxiliary field winding is of a small size sufficient to provide load sharing control within, for example, ?15%. Thus, the combination of clutch load sharing and auxiliary winding load sharing retains all the significant advantages of each of the separate systems and provide continuous control at a reduction in cost and space requirements.
