A B S T R A C T Load weighing devices for cranes, used to measure the weight being carried by the hook of the crane at a particular instant, generally include a dynamometer which operates to measure the load tension in the rope, and a safe load indicator which indicates the maximum load which the crane can safe- ly carry. The signal from the dynamometer is compared either manually or automatically with the signal representing the maximum load. A disadvantage of existing systems is that, due to frictional effects in the various sheaves and to rope bending losses, the dynamometer gives a different reading accord- ing to the direction of rope motion. This invention is directed to overcoming this disadvantage by the provision of a rope direction sensing element for sensing the direction of rope motion through the dynamometer. The dynamometer output signal is then modified in accordance with the direction of rope motion. In addition, the dynamometer output signal is modified in accordance with the number of falls of the rope.
