ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of locating the welding seam of a pipe is provided whereby laterally spaced ultrasonic transducers are positioned adjacent the seam, and echo pulses respond particularly to rather minute distance differences on account of the convex contour of the seam and its elevation above the con- tinued contour of the unmodified parts welded together. A representation of the location of the seam in relation to the transducers is obtained. A two or a three transducer configuration is used. The method is relatively insensitive to temperature variations and is suitable for locating welding seams of rather low height.
