The invention relates to a locking and unlocking device for vehicle doors, in particular swinging sliding doors for rail vehicles, having the features of the preamble of patent claim 1. Taking the disadvantages of the known prior art as a starting point, a locking and unlocking device is to be provided which requires a small amount of expenditure on manufacture and mounting, and ensures reliable locking and is suitable for different designs of door. As a solution it is proposed that at least one engagement element be provided on the inside of the door leaf or of the door at a defined distance from the inside of the door, and a spring-loaded spagnolet 12 be arranged horizontally opposite the latter on the inside of the door frame. The spagnolet 12 has a semicircular or claw-shaped recess 12d and a locking section 12b which projects laterally beyond the recess 12d. On the inside of the door frame, a locking element 13 is movably guided and is connected to at least one rod 14 which can be moved in the vertical direction. During the closing movement of the door leaves or of the door, the engagement element engages with the recess 12d of the spagnolet 12, and as a result of the pressing movement of the door leaf or of the door the spagnolet 12 swings with its locking section 12b in the direction of the center of the door opening and assumes a position extending parallel to the door leaf and is locked in this position by a movement of the locking element 13 which is triggered in the vertical direction.
