A syringe tip (114) is locked into a three-way dental handpiece body (12) by means of a syringe tip locking assembly (115) that screws into a threaded receiver (13) in the body of the handpiece (12). The locking assembly (115) comprises an adaptor (120) that has a central tapered male member (121) that receives one end of the syringe tip (114), a gripping member (140) that snaps over a raised lip (128) on the end of the adaptor body (120) and a locking cap (130) that screws onto the adaptor (120) and over the gripping member (140). The gripping member (140) includes a plurality of gripping fingers (11) that engage the syringe tip (114) and the locking cap (130) effects the tightening of the gripping fingers (141) into the syringe tip (114). The locking assembly (115) both applies a positive gripping action to the syringe tip (114) and also pulls the syringe tip (114) onto the tapered male member (121) to securely hold the syringe tip (114) in the adaptator (120) during use by the dentist. The gripping member (140) is captivated onto the raised lip (128) of the adaptator (120) to prevent inadvertent separation of the pieces.
