A locking tree cap 100 for use on a subsea tree. The tree cap 100 may be installed and retrieved using a remote operated vehicle. The tree cap 100 may include deflectable collet fingers 110, 120 that lock the tree cap 100 to a tree spool 200. The deflectable collet fingers 110, 120 may be adapted, such as with enlarged heads 111, 121, to extend into recesses 211, 221 of the tree spool 200 when the tree cap 100 has been landed on the tree spool 200. The tree cap 100 may be locked onto a tree spool 200 before energizing sealing members 112, 122 within the bores 209, 219 of the subsea tree, thereby protecting the sealing members 112, 122 from damage during the installation of the tree cap 100 onto the tree spool 200.
