A locking threaded fastener (10, 60, 60') of the wedge-action type is disclosed with threaded (12, 12', 12") threadless (14, 14', 14") nut members with wedge elements (26, 28, 32, 34, 82, 86) therebetween for wedging the nut members (12, 12', 12", 14, 14', 14") apart when the threaded nut member (14, 14', 14") is turned in the loosening di- rection. In a two-piece nut (10), the threadless nut member (14) has a flat inner surface (44) for engaging the workpiece (22) and the wedge elements (26, 28, 32, 34) have en- gaging surfaces with a coefficient of friction therebetween which is less than that be- tween the flat inner surface (44) and the workpiece surface. In a three-piece nut (14") a third nut member, in the form of a washer (62'), is provided with a flat inner surface for engaging the workpiece (22'). The wedge elements (82, 86) have engaging surfaces with a coefficient of friction less than that between the third nut member (62') and the threadless nut member (14") which, in turn, is less than that between the third nut member (62') in the workpiece (22').
