A pin lock mechanism is provided for locking a connecting pin into position. Such a connecting pin may be used, for example, to hold a hitch bar in a trailer hitch receiver or a pivot pin in a fifth wheel hitch. The pin lock mechanism comprises a locking plate with an elongated keyhole shaped slot. The slot includes a first, relatively large opening for receiving the end of the connecting pin, and a second, relatively small opening for sliding over and positioning into an annular groove of the pin. A lock, such as a padlock, is then closed with its shackle extending through the relatively large opening of the slot to secure the plate, and, therefore, the connecting pin in position.
