A lockset (10) for a door comprising a latchbolt assembly (36) including a bolt (40) movable between a partially extended latching position, a fully extended deadbolt position and a retracted position. A spindle (38) extends through the latchbolt assembly in a direction transverse of the direction of movement of the bolt (40). The spindle (38) is connected to the bolt for moving the bolt (40) between its positions upon rotation of the spindle. An operating assembly includes a hand operator (16) having a locking member (23) therein, a first plate (54) mounted for linear movement in a direction transverse to the axis of the spindle (38) and having a pair of ears (99, 101) vertically spaced about and generally aligned with the longitudinal axis of the spindle (38). A pivotally mounted actuator member (52) is movable in response to the hand operator (16) and has first and second surfaces (72, 74) vertically spaced about and generally aligned with the longitudinal axis of the spindle (38) and in engagement with the pair of ears (99, 101) such that pivotal movement of the actuator (52) produces linear movement of the first plate (54).
