GOK 101-138 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An actuator system is provided utilizing a high force prime mover such as an air bag to apply high working loads of short stroke and a piston and cylinder actuator to provide lower working loads of longer stroke, the outputs of the respective actuators being combines by a pinned linkage, to combine the characteristics of the two actuators to best advantage. The arrangement is of particular utility in paper mills, owing to the use of non-contaminating working medium, air, as distinct from hydraulic fluid and is particularly effective for loading and retracting the rolls of a calender or like apparatus.
