ABSTRACT A propulsion unit for an electrically propelled track vehicle in- cludes two coaxial shafts, one connected to a propulsion motor and the other to a transmission. The shafts are connected together by a coupling that in- cludes two coupling members, one on each shaft. The coupling members are interlocked together to transmit operating torque between the motor and the transmission, and one of the coupling members includes a hub body on one of the shafts and a flange extending integrally from the hub body and interlock- ed with the other coupling member attached to the other shaft. The housing supports the shafts in proper rotational position and is capable of with- standing a certain amount of operational stress, up to a known limit. The first coupling member includes a weakened region between the hub and the flange to break in response to torque greater than that normally encountered but less than the limit stress required to break the housing, and a pre-ten- sioning spring presses the flange away from the hub toward the other coupling member so that, in the event of fracture, the hub and flange will be pushed apart and free to rotate relative to each other.
