ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A modulator is disclosed which comprises a fibre loop reflector with means for varying the birefringence of the loop. The modulator can be used in a two way transmission system having a source at one terminal and a fibre loop at the other terminal. Conventional modulation techniques are used at the terminal with the source, whereas at the other terminal modulation is achieved with the modulator of the invention by modulation of the birefringence of the loop.
