An apparatus is provided for performing a method (Fig. 2) for pruning an index of a corpus of text documents, wherein the method includes steps for ranking (50) the postings in the index and pruning (48) from the index the postings below a given level in the ranking. The pruning methods of the invention are lossy, since some document postings are removed from the full index; however, the user cannot differentiate the lossy index from the full index.

L'invention concerne un appareil destiné à mettre en oeuvre un procédé permettant d'élaguer l'index d'un corpus de documents textuels. Ce procédé consiste à classer (50) les articles contenus dans l'index et à élaguer (48) de l'index les articles situés sous un niveau donné de classement. Les procédés d'élagage de l'invention sont des procédés avec perte, étant donné que certains articles de documents sont retirés de l'index complet. Cependant, l'utilisateur ne peut pas différentier l'index avec perte de l'index complet.
