ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Method and apparatus are provided for improving the bass response of an electrodynamic loudspeaker. The apparatus includes means for applying electrical energy to the loudspeaker corresponding to the sound to be reproduced within the bass response, the means including an electrical net- work having an effective output inpedance determined by a plurality of con- stituent impedance elements, the values of which have an effect on the values of predetermined reactive apparent mechanical parameters which the loud- speaker exhibits; the constituent impedance elements having such values that at least one of the reactive apparent mechanical parameters is substantially different from the corresponding one of the actual reactive mechanical para- meters substantially to change the lower bass cut-off frequency of the loud- speaker; and means for substantially cancelling the voice-coil impedance. By operating a loudspeaker with such an amplifier, a change can be obtained in the bass response of the speaker element and its moving mass, damping and compliance.
